pHSolve
Premium Calcite Filtration Media

Neutralise acidic water and raise pH to target range โ€” naturally, effectively, and without chemicals. Engineered for the low-pH groundwater profiles of southern Ghana and West Africa.

The pH Problem in West Africa

Acidic water (pH below 6.5) is widespread across Ghana's groundwater sources โ€” particularly in the Volta Basin, Eastern Region, and coastal aquifers. Low-pH water is corrosive to pipes, fixtures, and distribution infrastructure. It leaches heavy metals from plumbing (lead, copper, zinc) and causes aesthetic problems: metallic taste, blue-green staining, and equipment degradation.

pHSolve is a premium calcite media specifically selected for pH correction in African borehole water. Unlike generic limestone or crushed marble, pHSolve's controlled particle size, high purity, and low attrition rate deliver consistent pH elevation over extended service life.

How pHSolve Works

As acidic water passes through the pHSolve bed, calcium carbonate (CaCOโ‚ƒ) dissolves gradually, releasing calcium ions and bicarbonate into the water. This neutralises free acidity and raises pH to a stable target range of 7.0โ€“7.5. The process is self-limiting: as pH rises, dissolution slows, preventing over-correction.

Technical Note: pHSolve is a sacrificial media โ€” it dissolves over time and must be periodically replenished. Service life depends on influent pH, flow rate, and water hardness. Typical replacement interval: 12โ€“24 months for pH 5.5โ€“6.0 influent.

Applications

  • Borehole Water Treatment: Primary application for acidic groundwater in residential, commercial, and institutional settings
  • Municipal Pre-Treatment: Upstream pH correction before chlorination to improve disinfection efficiency
  • Industrial Process Water: pH adjustment for cooling towers, boiler feed, and process applications requiring neutral pH
  • Sachet Water Production: Pre-RO pH correction to reduce membrane fouling and extend membrane life
  • Aquaculture: pH stabilisation for fish farming and aquaculture systems

Installation & Maintenance Guidelines

๐Ÿ”ง Installation

  1. Bed Depth: Minimum 24 inches; 30โ€“36 inches recommended for optimal contact time
  2. Freeboard: Allow 50% freeboard above media bed for backwash expansion
  3. Support Gravel: Install 4โ€“6 inches of graded support gravel below pHSolve bed
  4. Flow Rate: Design for 2โ€“4 gpm/ftยฒ service flow rate (slower = better pH correction)
  5. Pre-Filtration: Install sediment pre-filter if turbidity > 5 NTU to prevent media fouling

๐Ÿ”„ Maintenance

  1. Backwashing: Weekly backwash at 8โ€“12 gpm/ftยฒ for 10โ€“15 minutes to remove fines and redistribute bed
  2. pH Monitoring: Test effluent pH monthly; declining pH indicates media depletion
  3. Media Replenishment: Add 10โ€“15% fresh media annually to maintain bed depth as calcite dissolves
  4. Full Replacement: Replace entire bed every 18โ€“24 months depending on influent pH and hardness
  5. Avoid Chlorine: Do not chlorinate before pHSolve โ€” chlorine accelerates media dissolution
